Microsoft Delivers New Cloud PC: Is your Business Ready for Windows 365?

This year, Microsoft has an exciting list of reveals for their annual partner event, Microsoft Inspire.  While the list is generating some much-anticipated buzz, one topic stands out as a very captivating new application service that could massively impact the industry – Windows 365.

By putting Windows in the cloud, Microsoft’s new virtual desktop application service will allow businesses to stream a version of Windows 10/Windows 11 in a web browser with access to Cloud PCs from anywhere. Best of all, this service will be offered at a fixed price and part of the Microsoft 365 cloud rather than Azure.

This is yet another step that Microsoft is taking to fully support hybrid/remote workers as we shift into post-pandemic, modern working environments.

How Windows 365 works

Through Microsoft’s Remote Desktop app or via any modern web browser, users can access their Cloud PC from a range of devices including Macs, iPads, Android devices and Linux machines. This means users can stream their Windows session accessing their apps, tools and data from virtually any device. This allows users to simply pick up exactly where they left off making travelling between home, office and other locations a breeze, even if they don’t carry the same hardware or devices that use Windows operating systems from their remote locations.

“You can pick up right where you left off, because the state of your Cloud PC remains the same, even when you switch devices.” Wangui McKelvey – General Manager for Microsoft 365.

When is it available? And How much Will it Cost?

Microsoft has noted that Windows 365’s official launch is slated for August 2nd as a per-user monthly subscription fixed-cost rather than on the same consumption-based pricing that Azure is on.

Following suit with modern business in mind, the subscription will be scalable from a single proprietor to thousands of employees and totally predictable from month-month.

While pricing was recently announced to be $31 per user/month, Microsoft stated that more pricing will be made available upon the initial launch and dependent on configurations. Microsoft is offering multiple configuration options from a single virtual CPU (2GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage) all the way up to eight virtual CPUs (32 GB of RAM and 512GB of storage).

This is sure to open the virtual desktop market to smaller organizations that previously never considered Azure to be an option.

How will this benefit my business?

While many organizations are currently using cloud-hosted desktop PCs like Amazon Web Services (AWS), the most comparable cloud pc service on today’s market, Windows Cloud 365 services offers a competitive new option.

It’s also worth noting that users of Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop might find this to be a similar technology, however, Windows 365 focuses on a more ready-to-go, user friendly experience. The objective is to make management for the administrative side and functionality for the user a more efficient and a far less complex process.

In terms of cost benefits, Windows 365 will provide another alternative to expensive on-premise VDI solutions without the need of any physical hardware to be purchased. Furthermore, Windows 365 instantly becomes an intriguing option for organizations hiring remote workers and others needing temporary yet secure network access.

  • Create and deploy Cloud PCs under 60 minutes.

  • No need for physical hardware.

  • Adds a security layer for personal devices.

  • End user friendly and managed through the M365 admin portal.

  • Predictable fixed monthly costs.

Less complexity, established security and the scalability of lower costs makes Windows 365 a more viable option for organizations that have been curious to try vCPU options. Combining these benefits and the wide-spread appeal of catering to a hybrid work environment truly makes this a service fit for businesses of all sizes to use.
