Unknown Number of British Columbians Affected As Personal Info Auctioned on Dark Web

Ontario based healthcare provider Homeward Health recently began contacting companies and agencies in British Columbia that have been affected in a hacking incident that took place earlier this year. An unknown number of people and organizations have potentially been left vulnerable by the incident as their personal information has been leaked onto the Dark Web.

Organizations that have been affected include BC Housing, Translink and the Provincial Health Services Authority. Further details on the incident are not yet available, however, Homewood Health is currently working with cybersecurity experts “to understand how the information was obtained and what information has been affected.”

While much of the stolen data continues to be up for auction on a data leaked marketplace, it has been reported that BC Housing appears to be the most impacted agency. Personal information of their employees has been leaked as a sample of the data that is up for sale. The Dark Web marketplace is currently showing hundreds of bids for the stolen information so far.

As remediation and investigation are ongoing for this highly unfortunate incident, those affected are being encouraged by threat authorities to be aware of the potential impacts of the leaked data, take action to monitor their personal and financial accounts accordingly, and to be cautious of any attempts where they may be targeted individually after the leaked data has been distributed.
